About Me    

 I'm Racquel Mafura-Roberts, founder of Pepper and Stew. I was born and raised in Zimbabwe and now live in the UK with my husband.

I love African food. 

When I came to the UK back in 2001, the love of food connected me to home and to new friends. I met people from all over Africa and discovered new dishes I’d never tried: Egusi spinach stew, palmnut soup and my favourite of all, jollof rice.

I realised I didn’t know much about African food. There were so many new things to try. I also noticed that most people I came across had either never tried African food, or just had knowledge about food from their home country (they’re missing out)! And, most of all, I found that some African food takes a lot of time to make.

So, I’ve set out to change all that.

I started Pepper and Stew to introduce African food to people who’ve never tried it, to offer fans of African food a place to try more of it, and to simplify the process of cooking it. 

Why? 

Well, first of all, it’s delicious. But beyond the taste buds...

Food connects.

It's a way of seeing people. I hope to share with you - and perhaps in the process make a few discoveries of my own -  knowledge of different African cultures through its cuisine. My dream is to travel through sub-Saharan Africa and write about the food and culture from each country.  For now, I hope you and I can create an awesome community of African food lovers here. 

Where to start?

You can’t go wrong with my Jollof rice with Boerewors dish ( takes under 30 minutes, and it’s the first thing to get devoured at every dinner party.)
